Bank Transfer Fraud

What Banks and Exchanges May Be Able to Do After a Fraudulent Transfer

Understanding the options and limits of banks, payment providers and cryptocurrency exchanges when you report fraud.

All insights

After a fraudulent transfer, many people hope their bank or exchange can simply reverse it. What is possible depends on the payment type, how quickly it is reported, the rules that apply in your country and the policies of the institutions involved.

Banks and payment providers

  • Card payments may be disputed through a chargeback process, subject to card network rules and time limits
  • For unauthorised electronic transfers, some jurisdictions give consumers specific protections when reported promptly; in the United States, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E set rules for unauthorised transfers
  • Wire transfers and authorised push payments are often harder to reverse, but banks can contact the receiving bank to request a recall or freeze where funds remain
  • Banks may require a police or fraud report and a written statement

Cryptocurrency exchanges

Blockchain transactions cannot be reversed once confirmed. However, if stolen funds reach an exchange account, that exchange may review the account under its own compliance policies and may cooperate with law enforcement requests. Exchanges generally act on reports from account holders and on legal process; they are not obliged to return funds.

Stablecoin issuers

Some stablecoin issuers have the technical ability to freeze tokens at specific addresses, typically in response to law enforcement. This is at the issuer's discretion and is not available on request from private individuals.

What helps

  • Reporting as quickly as possible
  • Providing clear transaction details, dates and amounts
  • Keeping a written record of every contact and reference number

No bank, exchange or investigator can guarantee that funds will be returned. Be wary of anyone who claims they can reverse blockchain transactions or "release" funds for a fee.
